Field guide No. 1529
Wind tossed wood grain beneath paper
The desk is shedding.
Thin strands of a wooden desktop’s grain lift off and stream in the breeze from a window, beside a neat stack of white paper that stays put. The paper weighs nothing and holds; the table blows away.
Field noteWalnut grain peeling into ribbons is a material oddity, though fine shavings do lift in a draught.
Also possible, also breaking material
Ice webs among autumn bramblesHoarfrost grows on webs every cold morning. These skipped the silk and went straight to ice.
Accordion-folded brick wallBrick holds its shape by being brick. This wall hangs in pleats as if it went through the wash with the curtains.
Snakes emerge from the woodgrainWoodgrain lifts off the boards as snakes. Patterns in planks are not meant to have heads.
Tectonic yolk breakfastLava glows through a cracked yolk. Breakfast is ready, and so, slowly, is the plate.
