Field guide No. 1449
Ice webs among autumn brambles
Frost, but with ambitions.
Red bramble stems under a grey sky, strung with white webs made of icicles. Somebody let the spiders work through the first frost.
Field noteHoarfrost grows on webs every cold morning. These skipped the silk and went straight to ice.
Also possible, also breaking material
The softest fossil in the abyssFossils are bone turned to stone. This one turned to smoke and has somehow kept its shape for ages.
Molted basalt, amber huskRock can break into a thin crust as it weathers. The basalt has shed a coat, very slowly.
The velvet faultA cliff crack lined in red velvet from top to bottom. Rock does not crack in cloth, but the cloth fits the crack fine.
Tapering sedimentary layers in harsh lightShale this thin would snap under its own weight; sedimentary rock is not known for cantilevers.
