Field guide No. 651
Empty net, warped pier
The catch was the pier.
A fishing net is stretched over the end of an old wooden pier, and the planks underneath have sagged down into it like a hammock with something heavy in. There is nothing in it.
Field notePlanks bend a little. These have sagged into the shape of a full net with nothing in it, like wet cloth.
Also possible, also breaking material
The radiator’s soft landingOak that sags like a mattress is wood forgetting itself. Heavy radiators on soft floors are no paradox.
Where rainbows become rockRainbows end nowhere you can reach. This one carries on into a quarry face as coloured stone.
Molars in a purple geodeA geode with double-row human molars in place of crystal pockets; the dentist found the cavities.
Silver scale ripples on speaker conesSpeaker cones wear overlapping fish scales, spiralling inward as if each woofer had grown a skin.
