Field guide No. 578
Punching holes in steam
Perforated, for easy tearing.
In a dark workshop, a heavy punch press stamps a row of neat round holes through a flat belt of steam, which slides on as if it were sheet metal. The holes stay put.
Field notePunch presses need something solid. This one stamps neat holes in a belt of steam that keeps them.
Also possible, also breaking material
Pink gum splits the courtPink gum oozes up through a timber court and buckles the boards into a star; the squash is real.
Translucent tongue at the salt lickTongue of clear crystal stretches from a doe to the pink salt rock, glassy as the seam it licks.
Sandstone coats in a seaside changing roomStone carved into a coat is just a sculptor’s idea of a cloakroom. Heavy, but coherent.
Chalk scuffed cloud between alpine cliffsClouds are mist and pass through anything. This one has rubbed the cliffs on its way through and left white marks.
