Field guide No. 1508
Tapering sedimentary layers in harsh light
Geology, sharpened to a point.
Bands of purple, cream and black rock jut out of a cliff face and taper into thin blades, as if the strata had been pulled out like drawers. Millions of years of deposit, finished with a pencil sharpener.
Field noteShale this thin would snap under its own weight; sedimentary rock is not known for cantilevers.
Also possible, also breaking material
Water padlock on a rusted chainLocks work by being hard. This one is water and holds a chain anyway, dripping.
Paper plane in origami mudMud can hold folds until rain returns. The plane has a runway of damp paper.
Tire tread in quartzA truck tread pressed deep into clear quartz. Crystal does not take a print, but a boulder with one is coherent.
Terracotta tails across the rubbleCourses of fired clay drooping like rope ask a lot of mortar, yet every brick is still a brick.
