Field guide No. 484
The softest fossil in the abyss
Preserved, in smoke.
On the black deep-sea floor, an enormous fish skeleton made of white wisps like smoke lies across the sediment, lit by a small yellow submersible. One good breath would finish it.
Field noteFossils are bone turned to stone. This one turned to smoke and has somehow kept its shape for ages.
Also possible, also breaking material
The radiator’s soft landingOak that sags like a mattress is wood forgetting itself. Heavy radiators on soft floors are no paradox.
The inflated highwayTarmac cracks long before it swells. Blown up like a lilo, it’s behaving like rubber.
Air bridges a broken piano stringA snapped string goes slack. Here the air has taken up the gap and kept the tension, which air has never had.
The velvet switchbackRoads take any surface that bears weight. Velvet bears it badly, and beautifully.
