Field guide No. 1430
Crumpled granite on barren scree
Rock, after a rough draft
On a grey scree slope, a granite boulder is crumpled like a sheet of paper balled up and half opened. The mountain did not like its first draft.
Field noteGranite fractures and never folds, but this boulder is creased like a letter someone balled up.
Also possible, also breaking material
Crystalline wings in black lavaOrange butterfly wings are packed into a lava crack like ore. Mining it would call for tweezers.
Knotted brick chimneyChimney tied in an overhand knot, its brickwork bending like rope.
A matter of tasteMoss and rock layered on sponge is a terrarium with a cake slice’s ambitions. Inedible, still possible.
Snowflake wings in spring thawMoth wings shed scales as dust. This moth’s wing breaks up into drifting snowflakes.
