Field guide No. 638
Colander of falling holes
Draining the wrong thing.
A steel colander hangs over a tiled kitchen floor and its holes drop out of it as small black discs, scattering across the tiles. One has rolled off to make a hole of its own in the grout.
Field noteHoles are where something isn’t. These drop out as solid black discs, and one makes a fresh hole where it lands.

Magnet bending the horizonHorizons are where the eye runs out, not a thing to pull, and this magnet has pulled one up anyway.
Yellow stripes over a violet cloudLane lines are paint on a track and have no other surface. These carry on over cloud as if it were ground.
Peel backBoulder’s shadow lifts off the wet sand at the far end like a strip of tape.
The chair's impossible treeA shadow is a chair’s outline or it isn’t a chair’s shadow. This one is a tree’s, cast by a chair.
