Field guide No. 615
A crocodile’s mouthful of beginnings
Teeth, but hatching.
A crocodile lies in a muddy river with its jaws open, and every tooth is a white egg, one of them already cracked open with a hatchling climbing out. Dentistry has never been this hopeful.
Field noteEggs sit where the teeth go, one already hatching. Crocodiles do carry their young in the mouth, just not as dentures.
Also possible, also breaking category
Ground controlA grasshopper sits on a dusty dashboard. The driver yielded to a smaller operator.
White blossoms on thorn tipsWhite blossoms open exactly at the tips of the thorns. Brambles flower elsewhere on the stem, which is the only quarrel.
Last stop, asparagusTowers are tall, green and tapered when architects allow it. Asparagus has been doing it for free.
Fossil circuit beneath a future cityFossils are things that once lived. A circuit board in the strata is rock remembering something it shouldn’t.
