Field guide No. 1255
Whisper between abandoned payphones
The line is still open.
Two black payphone handsets hang on a scratched yellow panel, joined by a clear ribbon of water running from one earpiece to the other. Someone is talking, or leaking.
Field noteTwo handsets joined by a ribbon of clear water. Water is a poor wire, but it makes a connection of a sort.
Also possible, also breaking material
Pink gum splits the courtPink gum oozes up through a timber court and buckles the boards into a star; the squash is real.
Transparent goat in a sparse orchardGoat fur fades to glass mid-body, so the orchard tree behind shows right through the animal’s middle.
Sound caught in a silver colanderSound has no shape to strain; glass ripples do. As sculpture it stands; as acoustics it leaks.
Chalk scuffed cloud between alpine cliffsClouds are mist and pass through anything. This one has rubbed the cliffs on its way through and left white marks.
