Field guide No. 604
Three summer meadows frozen in ice
Stored for winter.
In the face of a blue glacier above a frozen bay, strips of green summer meadow, grass and flowers still bright, are layered between the bands of ice. A very long cold store.
Field noteGlaciers grind meadows away. This one has kept strips of summer grass in flower between its bands.
Also possible, also breaking physics
The sleep of stonesBoulders cradled in smooth dips as if the ground gave way for them. Quarries do not do this; nothing here forbids it.
The last unread snowfallBooks describe snow; they don’t usually issue it. The rest of the desk is perfectly ordinary.
Frozen curtains at summer's endCurtains drop when the wind does. These froze clear mid-billow, icicles on the hems.
Blue butterfly through the lockA butterfly wing passes through a rusted padlock. The gate accepted a very small key.
