Field guide No. 1225
The railway’s impossible knot
The track tied one for itself.
A railway line runs across a frosty field and ties itself into a loose overhand knot, sleepers and all, before carrying on. Timetables are not expected to survive this.
Field noteRail tied in an overhand knot, sleepers attached. Steel will not bend that way, which is a fact about steel only.
Also possible, also breaking material
Oak leaves beneath pressed bubblesBrown oak leaves lie under clear glassy domes on a pool, displayed like a collection and loosely labelled.
The rug unravels into spaghettiFringes on a woollen rug turn into limp strands of cooked spaghetti spilling across the floorboards.
The radiator’s soft landingOak that sags like a mattress is wood forgetting itself. Heavy radiators on soft floors are no paradox.
Where rainbows become rockRainbows end nowhere you can reach. This one carries on into a quarry face as coloured stone.
