Field guide No. 742
The dam of fallen leaves
Reservoir level: autumn.
A concrete dam holds back a whole valley of red fallen leaves instead of water, and the overflow pours down the spillway as leaves. The turbines must be very quiet.
Field noteLeaves pile and drift like a slow liquid. Impounding a valley of them behind concrete is only engineering.

A crocodile’s mouthful of beginningsEggs sit where the teeth go, one already hatching. Crocodiles do carry their young in the mouth, just not as dentures.
Ear shaped crease in saltA curled ridge on a salt flat takes the shape of an ear. It has heard everything and says only crystals.
A yawning porcelain platePorcelain can be cast into lips, but this glaze is stretched mid-yawn, which needs a jaw.
