Field guide No. 711
Scarlet button on the salt horizon
Somebody’s coat is very cold.
A red four-holed button the size of a car lies half sunk in a white salt flat, the crust cracked around it in a honeycomb. The coat it came off is nowhere on the horizon.
Field noteButtons come in all sizes, but car-sized is a lot of coat. This one lies sunk in salt.
Also possible, also breaking scale
Silver web across a volcanic craterSilk strung rim to rim over a crater. Spiders are real; one that size is merely missing.
Heavy breathingDust bag inflated past its vacuum’s ambitions, now pressing on two walls and a window.
Heart of the villageLeaves are walls if they are large enough. Artichokes have simply never been asked.
A geological disagreementRock can bend and fold; tying a whole canyon in a knot just needs more time than there has been.
