Field guide No. 670
Impossible cubic pearl in oyster
Took it a while to get the corners.
An open oyster on a wet black rock holds a pearl that is a perfect dark cube, with the same sheen as a round one. Stringing a necklace of these would be a long afternoon.
Field notePearls grow round because nacre goes on in layers. This oyster layered one with corners.
Also possible, also breaking physics
Road splitting into darknessThe highway opens into a muddy pit, centre line and all. Repairs are scheduled, indefinitely.
The ladder harvestWood that was a tree has decided to be one again. Carpentry does not usually reverse.
Light cut by lightTwo crossing beams pass through each other. Here one cuts the other, and the off-cut falls and bounces.
Revolving petals on alpine screeA red flower spins above a rocky alpine slope. The plant has found a way to keep moving.
