Field guide No. 078
Deep purple
Moored in the shallows.
An aubergine fitted out as a submarine, with portholes, a hatch and a periscope, rests in turquoise water by a stone harbour.
Field noteHollow it, seal it, add a periscope. Vegetables lack ambition, not buoyancy.
Also possible, also breaking category
Proof of purchaseOnion layers do peel in ribbons. Reading one as a receipt is the onion’s own interpretation.
The zebra’s unfinished stripesStripes are pigment, not ribbon, so the spool is a category slip. The half-zebra is otherwise sound.
Berry far awayDomes are domes; a red one with seeds would still track stars. Planning would object first.
Hot departureFuselages come in stranger shapes. Few are grown, and fewer are this hot.
