Field guide No. 436
Breathing earth beneath torn turf
The ground, exposed.
On grassy moorland a strip of turf has peeled back, and the soil underneath is pale pink folds of something like flesh. The hill would rather you didn’t look.
Field noteSoil is grit and rot. This is pink and layered like muscle, which hills are not supposed to have.
Also possible, also breaking material
Eight loose endsSpiders are built of legs and silk, never wool. This one was knitted, apparently.
Please untangle the northern lightsAuroras are light a hundred kilometres up. This one came low enough, and solid enough, to snag.
Lightly dressedAny leaf can hang over a bulb. Few lampshades wilt by Thursday.
A suitable pauseBenches are wood, water is wet, and neither rule forbids the other. The greyhound has not asked.
