Field guide No. 221
A suitable pause
The bench is running.
A sleepy greyhound sprawls on a park bench made of flowing water, overlooking a domed city at dusk. The bench keeps moving; the dog does not.
Field noteBenches are wood, water is wet, and neither rule forbids the other. The greyhound has not asked.
Also possible, also breaking material
The velvet switchbackRoads take any surface that bears weight. Velvet bears it badly, and beautifully.
A matter of tasteMoss and rock layered on sponge is a terrarium with a cake slice’s ambitions. Inedible, still possible.
The radiator’s soft landingOak that sags like a mattress is wood forgetting itself. Heavy radiators on soft floors are no paradox.
Lightly dressedAny leaf can hang over a bulb. Few lampshades wilt by Thursday.
