Field guide No. 497
A soft landing
The pillow didn’t budge.
A red brick has slumped over a white pillow on a dusty workshop floor, creased like a blanket, while the pillow, veined like marble, keeps its shape. One of them is the soft one.
Field noteBrick and pillow have traded jobs, nothing worse: the clay took the give and left the marble to the bedding.
Also possible, also breaking material
Lightly dressedAny leaf can hang over a bulb. Few lampshades wilt by Thursday.
A suitable pauseBenches are wood, water is wet, and neither rule forbids the other. The greyhound has not asked.
A stitch in porcelainThread through china would need holes the needle can’t make. Stubborn, not contradictory.
Fermented files in green cabinetsPaper is pulp, flat and finished. These files have gone yeasty and risen out of the drawers.
