Field guide No. 498
A message with some weight
Signal received, by the tonne.
At dusk a huge radio dish in a desert array catches a column of red sand pouring down out of the sky and spills it off its rim onto the ground. Someone out there finally got through, and it arrived by weight.
Field noteRadio dishes gather whispers from far off. This one is gathering a sand pile, and the message is mostly ballast.
Also possible, also breaking category
Sea urchin weaving ivory laceUrchins have spines and tube feet, no bobbins. Lacework is a hobby they never took up.
A stone missing itselfHollows in rock come from wear. This one wore away in the outline of a smaller stone that is nowhere about.
Last stop, asparagusTowers are tall, green and tapered when architects allow it. Asparagus has been doing it for free.
The zebra’s unfinished stripesStripes are pigment, not ribbon, so the spool is a category slip. The half-zebra is otherwise sound.
