Field guide No. 422
A slip in the distance
Minor misalignment, far off.
A white salt flat runs to the horizon under a pale sky, and halfway across, the horizon steps down a level like two photos badly joined. Someone will have to come out and fix that.
Field noteA horizon is level by definition. This one has a step in it, so it’s level twice.

Also impossible, also breaking physics
Knotted river through autumn marshWater in a knot has to cross over itself, flowing above its own surface without a bridge.
Lunar eclipse, impossible spotlightAn eclipse is the place light isn’t. A beam pouring out of its dark middle is shade shining.
Open orchard door, floating hardwareIts handle and lock still hang where the shut door would be, while the door itself stands wide open beside them.
Noon in reverseLight falling exactly where the shade belongs is shade that is lit. That is a square trying to be round.
