Field guide No. 738
Sweeping the grain away
The floor, swept back to pine.
An old broom sweeps a dark wooden floor and the grain comes up with it, piling in curls of brown fibre and leaving the boards pale and blank behind. It is very clean, and very bare.
Field noteGrain is the wood, not something on it. Sweeping it into a pile leaves boards that are somehow still boards.

The unfinished visitorFur at the head, marble at the tail, sitting up. Carved and alive at once, the rabbit is both.
Crab climbs through painted drainA painted drain is flat paint on a floor. A crab climbs out of its depth, so it is a picture and a hole at once.
Volcanic eyelid across the plainGround has no eyes and eyes have no lava. This crater is plainly a closed lid, lashes and all.
