Field guide No. 280
Roots under the spare step
The stairs are growing back.
Worn stone steps in a sunny old lane have one tread missing its middle, and in the gap a dense tangle of roots holds the shape of the step. The repair is organic.
Field noteRoots take the shape of whatever’s missing, given decades. Slow masonry, but masonry.
Also possible, also breaking nothing
Afternoon, somewhereA chair, some arches and a flooded floor. Architects have done stranger things on purpose.
Custard cathedralMoulded puddings in architectural shapes are an old banquet trick. Lighting one is the only liberty.
Please remain seatedCacti sit in pots on chairs all the time. Waiting rooms just rarely admit it.
Washed zebra stripes on terrazzoZebra hide exists, washers exist, terrazzo exists. The laundry ticket simply doesn’t.
