Field guide No. 373
Liquid saguaro after the storm
Mostly water, still prickly.
Under breaking storm clouds in a red desert, a tall saguaro cactus is made of clear running water, spines and all, pooling at its base. It finally had enough to drink.
Field noteSpines need something to stand in. Water holding a cactus shape, spines and all, is solid and not.

Fish over folded pool waterWater folded into a stack keeps its shape, which is the one thing water doesn’t do.
Koi swimming through woodA fish swims through liquid. A floor that is liquid for fish and solid for chairs is both.
Pigeon on a soft brick cushionBrick that sags like a cushion is not brick, whatever the mortar says.
