Field guide No. 1439
Fallen tree with granite roots
Rooted in stone, and fell anyway
A fallen tree lies on a gravel plain, and its upturned root ball is made of granite, grained and cracked like the wood above it. It fell anyway.
Field noteGranite roots should have held anything upright; the trunk toppled and the stone base came up whole.
Also possible, also breaking material
Transparent goat in a sparse orchardGoat fur fades to glass mid-body, so the orchard tree behind shows right through the animal’s middle.
A stitch in porcelainThread through china would need holes the needle can’t make. Stubborn, not contradictory.
Empty net, warped pierPlanks bend a little. These have sagged into the shape of a full net with nothing in it, like wet cloth.
Peeling moonlight on dark woodSheets of clear light lie across the floor, lifting at the corners beneath a full moon.
