Field guide No. 266
Bowling alley’s solid wooden wave
Lane four is closed for surfing.
In an empty teal bowling alley, one polished wooden lane rears up into a curling wave while a black ball waits at the foot of it. The pins are still standing, safely in the barrel.
Field noteMaple bent into a curl is a joiner’s nightmare, not a contradiction. Steam does strange things to wood.
Also possible, also breaking material
Knotical milesSmall boats ride waves; this wave is chunky knit. Wool makes poor weather, comfortably.
A softer landingOak is not upholstery. The floor is behaving like the wrong material, nothing worse.
Brass seeds in a glass pearAny glassblower and any jeweller could split this commission. Sculpture, not paradox.
Sandstone coats in a seaside changing roomStone carved into a coat is just a sculptor’s idea of a cloakroom. Heavy, but coherent.
