Field guide No. 1240
Torn leaf, emerging butterflies
One leaf, several exits.
A dry brown leaf on pale soil has its torn edge breaking into butterflies of the same colour, which scatter across the ground. It is the only autumn that has ever flown.
Field noteA torn leaf edge turns into butterflies of its own colour. Moths do mimic leaves; none are born from one.
