Field guide No. 597
The dryer’s endless tunnel
Lost socks: this way.
In a pale green laundrette, the open door of a tumble dryer shows a long lamp-lit brick tunnel running far back beyond the drum. Everything that went missing went down there.
Field noteA drum two feet deep cannot hold a mile of brick tunnel. This dryer’s does.

Pocket weather bureauA hurricane is weather on the scale of a coastline. One small enough for a waistcoat is not a hurricane.
Tornado trapped in a tumbleweedA tornado is wider than any weed. Caught inside one, it’s smaller than its own container.
Nest of the stretched branchNest cup drops into a dark funnel far deeper than the fork can hold.
A spoonful of seaA sea is, among other things, more than a spoonful. This one is both.
