Field guide No. 1179
Salamander beneath the puddle surface
Swimming on the ceiling.
An orange salamander swims just beneath the surface of a clear stream over red-brown stones and fallen leaves. It is upside down, or the water is, and neither is willing to say.
Field noteAn orange salamander swims on the underside of the surface. Water is merely being walked on from below.
Also possible, also breaking physics
Cyclamen blooms beneath the soilFlowers open to the light for the bees. These bloom in the dark, for the worms.
Garden hoses recoil from a tiny puddleWater can arc from hoses, even when the garden has no plan for it. The puddle is small.
Folded pool, level waterThe tiled pool bends into a saddle while its water lies flat. The architect likes the geometry, little else.
Slug’s cracked trail on wet stepsSlug trails do dry and crack, just not on wet wood seconds after the slug.
