Field guide No. 1578
Lasting impression
The chair moved. The carpet didn’t.
A red armchair stands in the corner of a faded green room. In the middle of the carpet is a full armchair-shaped dent, raised in pile, buttons and all.
Field noteCarpet pile remembering an armchair in full relief, tufted buttons included, long after it was moved.
Also possible, also breaking physics
Going upLifts exist and so do clouds. Getting one to wait inside the other is weather’s business.
Whale-shaped void in sardine swarmShoals close over a gap in a second. This one holds a whale’s outline open with nothing inside.
Summer turf unfurls across snowA strip of green grass crosses a snowy field beside a hay bale. Winter has left one aisle open.
The endless elevator corridorElevator doors open onto a corridor with no end. A lift shaft cannot hold that, but a corridor can run long.
