Field guide No. 336
Beech roots form a living knot
Tied by the forest, not untied.
Thick mossy tree roots reach across a forest stream and tie themselves into a single tight knot above the water. Nobody knows which tree is holding the other end.
Field noteRoots do tangle. Tied in a proper knot over a stream, they’re just showing off.
Also possible, also breaking scale
The pincushion wetlandsStilt houses need stilts; pins are stilts with a point. Herons do not ask about zoning.
Feather-filled ribcage motel at midnightA ribcage that size needs an animal no larger than a motel. It just isn’t there.
Slow amusementA miniature funfair on a glass snail is a model maker’s commission. Ambitious, not absurd.
Switch to springA gateway shaped like a switch plate is a folly, not a paradox. Follies are allowed.
