Field guide No. 425
Against the grain: tangled badlands strata
Geology, unsupervised.
A grey badlands cliff is neatly layered at the top and bottom, and in the middle the strata twist and loop into a knot. A few million years went sideways.
Field noteRock does fold under pressure, though rarely into a tangle with tidy layers above and below it.
Also possible, also breaking physics
The last matchSmoke setting solid is chemistry misbehaving. A cube of anything is still a perfectly sound cube.
Heavy break on the greenFelt doesn’t sag like a rubber sheet under light balls. This table lectures on gravity.
The self-dismantling amplifierLoud amps do rattle screws loose. This one has unscrewed every one at once and let go of its panels.
The chalk migrationPaper birds fold easily; napkins hold a shape. Flying south is an aerodynamic stretch.
