Field guide No. 1068
A transparent tortoise in gravel
Hard to see, harder to find.
Pale tortoise shells with plated texture sit half-formed in the gravel of a white quarry floor, among tyre tracks and rubble. They have blended in so well that the quarry has stopped asking.
Field notePale glassy shells lie half-formed in quarry gravel. Camouflage went one step past colour.
Also possible, also breaking material
Clouds pressed into a coral towelTowels pick up sand, not weather. This one has whole clouds raised in its terry.
Magenta within the leafA green leaf opens onto a magenta interior. The plant has developed a second colour scheme.
Bridge draped in white horsehairArch soffit grows a curtain of long white hair down toward the dry riverbed.
Fresh airFruit makes a feeble blade, but a blade nonetheless. The fan would work, briefly and stickily.
